Frequently asked questions
Your hypnobirthing questions answered by Dr Erin
Traditional hospital antenatal classes often focus on “managing pain.” Hypnobirthing takes a different view. It’s based on the idea that when a healthy body and mind work in harmony, and fear is replaced with confidence, birth can unfold comfortably and naturally, with fewer interventions.
Rather than focusing on a medical model, you’ll learn to release tension and produce endorphins (your body’s natural pain-relieving hormones), rather than stress hormones. Through breathing, visualisation, and deep relaxation, you’ll work with your body, not against it—helping to create a calmer, and more positive birthing experience.
Hypnobirthing is a modern, evidence-based approach to birth preparation that combines education, relaxation, and self-hypnosis techniques to help you feel calm, confident and in control. It’s about creating the right mindset for an empowered and positive birth experience — whatever that looks like for you.
The Hypnobirthing Australia™ Positive Birth Program that I teach draws on research in psychology and physiology to help you understand how your body and mind work together during birth. When you’re relaxed and informed, your body’s natural birthing hormones can do their job beautifully.
Every birth is unique. Hypnobirthing doesn’t promise that you won’t feel any sensations—but it does help you experience them differently. Many women describe strong feelings of tightening or pressure rather than pain. When fear and tension are replaced with trust and relaxation, the body functions more efficiently, and interprets intense sensations more productively.
The sweet spot is usually between 20 and 33 weeks of pregnancy—it gives you time to practise the techniques and integrate them into your daily routine. But it’s never too late! I’ve worked with parents who started their course in the final weeks of pregnancy and still found the skills transformative.
You’re welcome to bring whoever will support you during your birth—your partner, doula, sister, mum, or a close friend. Your birth partner learns practical tools to help you stay calm and focused, and they often leave feeling more confident and involved. You’re also very welcome to come solo if that’s what feels right for you.
That’s entirely your choice. The Hypnobirthing Australia™ course is a complete childbirth education program on its own, but some parents like to attend both. Hospital sessions tend to focus on medical procedures and policies, while hypnobirthing teaches you how to work with your body, release fear, and maintain a sense of calm. The two can complement each other beautifully.
That’s okay. More care providers are becoming aware of the approach every year. You’ll learn how to create a clear, respectful Birth Preferences plan so your team understands what’s important to you. Open communication and collaboration are key—and most midwives are very supportive once they see how calm and prepared you are.
Yes, in most cases. Rebates depend on your provider and the practitioner’s registration type. I can provide receipts with the relevant details, and you can check directly with your fund to confirm eligibility. Some require specific wording such as “Childbirth Education” or “Hypnotherapy for Childbirth.”
Each course includes:
• 12 hours of face-to-face teaching (across two sessions)
• Access to online resource platform
• Two relaxation & self-hypnosis albums
• Folio of scripts, visualisations and breathing tools
• Birth rehearsal video and eBook
• Links to additional reading and resources
• Ongoing support from me throughout your pregnancy
Not at all. It’s for every kind of birth—vaginal, assisted, or caesarean. Hypnobirthing isn’t about being “alternative” - although that is a common misconception! - it’s about being prepared, informed, and calm. The tools you learn apply to any birthing situation and can benefit anyone who wants to feel empowered in their experience. No crystals or guitars, I promise 😜
